Our dishwasher has been broken for almost 2 weeks now, and although Rick was able to take it apart and figure out what was wrong, the part won't be in for another week. So, we've been washing all the dishes by hand for that long, and let me just say that I'm ready to have my dishwasher back!

Not that I mind doing dishes--I really don't. In fact, we have lived at least a third of our marriage without one. However, it wasn't when we had 5 kids. We go through A LOT of dishes, and it just takes a lot of time that I'm used to having to do other things with. Ryan has also done quite a few of them, since the dishwasher is his job, and actually hasn't complained at all. He seems to think it's faster.
I don't think he would have the same opinion in a few more weeks.
.....
Now on to broken appliance #2. Mister Henry B. has quite the reputation about town for breaking things. Nothing malicious, but I'm afraid he doesn't realize his own strength. About a month ago, he broke our cordless phone--rendering it unuseable.
So, we've been using this beauty:

I know---quite the blast to the past, right? I keep it in our food storage for emergencies--just in case the electricity is out and our cordless phones didn't work. It doesn't have an answering machine, and it HAS A CORD. If I'm stirring something on the stove, despite the phone being 10 feet away, I can't leave to go answer it, or stand there to talk for long at all.
This morning I was talking to my sister on the phone, and I had to put it down at least 5 times to go and help the kids while they were eating breakfast. I'm so accustomed to having a phone next to my ear, and still getting things done, and it was so hard not being able to do that.
I also had to laugh when a good friend called, and Kate answered the phone for me since I couldn't get to it at that moment. I could hear her on the phone, explaining that "this phone has a swirly thing on it, and I can't take it to my mom anymore". So funny.
So, yes, we need a new phone. Hopefully this weekend, when I actually see Rick in person, we can go pick one out.
I am definitely feeling grateful for all those modern conveniences that are so, so easy to take for granted. When you have to go without them, it quickly becomes evident how nice it is to have them!
Lesson learned. No need to go on to #3.

I went through both of these same issues in the past year. I love my modern conveniences!
I think I would resort to paper plates ; ) I love my dishwasher and there are only two of us at home. Hope your dishwasher gets fixed soon.
Let's hope there is not a #3 however I find that these things usually happen in 3's if not more. I can't believe you have no dishwasher, but I had to laugh to see that even when you hand wash your dishes they are laid out perfectly organized on that towel. And the funny swirly thing tied to the phone was a riot. It is amazing how quickly you get used to things like cordless phones and how weird the "outdated" things must seem to our children. I had to rewind a VHS tape the other day and it about killed me how long it took.
No fun - any of it! I'm praying you get a new phone faster - although I've kind of been liking Kate answering it :)
Love the swirly thing. I keep saying i am stuck on a land line. That is the wrong word isn't it.
My son Will wants to know why the dishes in the photo "look all perfect"! I have to agree- if you have to do them by hand how you manage to have the time to make them look THAT good?!
I have a hard time describing you to my other friends. I don't think they believe me, and this picture helps illustrate the unbelievably neat person you are. It keeps me going sometimes, Kierste. Thank you for your great example. And we just replaced our dishwasher... it was a crazy week without it! But I strengthened my testimony of disposable dining products during that time. =) Good luck!
I was just looking at phones this morning and wondering which on was the most indestructible. Ours is broken, but only the display screen. I think I would go crazy if I had to deal with a cord again!
